Is your home suffering from termites? Termite barriers are a great solution for homeowners who are looking to invest in long-term treatment against pests. However, as new technologies lead to more installation options, it can be difficult to know which termite barrier to opt for.
There are four main
types of termite barriers available to homeowners on the Sunshine Coast. Read to find out more about these options, and to make sure you choose the right one for your home!
Chemical termite barriers are an increasingly popular option for homeowners. A trench is dug around your home’s perimeter and extended down to the footings. This trench is then sprayed with chemical substances, such as Termidor, and soil is put on top again.
Chemical barriers are completely safe for humans and function differently depending on the chemical used. For example, whilst some might act as a deterrent to termites, others kill them. In the case of the former option, termites will carry the chemical substance with them and spread it throughout the colony.
This termite barrier is particularly useful if you’re thinking of building a new home on the Sunshine Coast. This is because it requires high-quality soil to activate the chemical agent. Alternatively, they are good if your home is built on top of a concrete slab as a perfect trench around your home can be created.
Reticulation barrier systems offer targeted termite prevention solutions. A series of underground pipes are positioned around the perimeter of your property underground. Termiticide is then dispersed through it at high pressures to kill termite colonies.
Reticulation systems offer long-term termite management and are easily replenished. This is because they have handy refill points on the pipes every 10 to 12 metres.
This termite barrier system is useful for homes undergoing renovation or built upon concrete slabs. A reticulation system will be added where an old concrete slab joins a new one when adding to your home’s structure.
A baiting system is a specialised solution to termites that requires patience. Stations are installed throughout your home where termites are likely to intercept.
These stations are then monitored and then, when termites are found in the station, termite bait is added. This attractant, which is usually pure cellulose, kills termites.
Suncoast Termite and Pest offer the
EXTERRA Baiting System which is the only termite barrier of its kind that creates a complete termite interception zone. Baiting systems are eco-friendly and avoid the need for chemicals to be dispersed all around your home – making them safer for pets.
Physical termite barriers are self-explanatory. Physical infrastructure is incorporated into your property foundations or installed around your home to resist termite infestations.
Physical barriers are typically installed under slabs, within cavity walls and within home foundations. They are usually made out of materials that termites can’t penetrate, such as rock or metal.
Our Trithor Termite Protection is a physical termite barrier that uses a geotextile blanket. It offers quick installation and complete concealment.
